Thorold set to celebrate Canada with a three-day party

Music, food and fun will help city mark nation’s 157th birthday

Canada Day celebrations are one of the city's most popular events, says Jacob Tedesco, special events co-ordinator for the City of Thorold.

As Canada Day draws near, what transpires at the Battle of Beaverdams Park will be the result of plenty of hard work.

“Planning is a year-round endeavour, starting soon after each event concludes to ensure smooth operations for the following year,” says Jacob Tedesco, who is the special events co-ordinator for the City of Thorold. "The festivities require comprehensive planning involving a dedicated team that coordinates all aspects of events such as Canada Day celebrations, the Thorold Community Market, and the Santa Claus Parade and other events.”

Three days of events are planned to mark Canada’s 157th birthday, including a day of jazz music presented by the TD Niagara Jazz Festival on June 29, followed up on June 30 with a day dedicated to classic rock and blues while on Canada Day itself, July 1 will be a day filled with music and other activities culminating with a fireworks display.

This year marks the first time the events have been spread over three days and it is also the first time the jazz festival has taken place in Thorold.

“So far, it has been a great partnership with TD Canada that I hope will continue to flourish for years,” Tedesco says.

It is Tedesco's hope that the addition of a third day will make the weekend even more attractive to Niagara residents.

“Canada Day stands out as our most popular annual event, attracting families, individuals, and friends to the park for a day filled with activities catering to all,” he says.

The high level of interest is not surprising, he adds.

“Events are well attended and [they] highlight Thorold's strong community spirit,” says Tedesco. “The recent market at [the] park drew about 800 attendees, bringing together residents to support local businesses and enjoy live entertainment and drinks from local sources.”

But with strong attendance comes a need for making sure plans are in place to make sure things run smoothly.

“Safety is a priority at larger gatherings like Canada Day, where fire services provide first aid and emergency readiness,” Tedesco says. “Clear emergency routes, safety plans, and additional security personnel ensure a secure environment.”

Attendees to any of the events, should take appropriate measures for the weather by using sunscreen and ensuring they remain hydrated. They are also advised to bring their own lawn chairs.

One thing's for certain: there will be plenty of things to do over the three days.

“Highlights include a diverse lineup of bands, exciting kids' attractions like our inflatable obstacle course, and a wide array of delicious food from various food trucks and vendors,” Tedesco says.
