NIAGARA FALLS - Walker Industries will build on the spirit of Ontario’s upcoming annual Day of Action on Litter by supporting community clean-ups year-round across Niagara.
After stay-at-home orders are lifted, Walker will provide free disposal of litter collected by volunteers who register their community clean-up initiatives throughout 2021 at its landfill in Thorold.
“We want to do our part to help keep the communities in which we live and operate stay clean and safe,” says Mike Deprez, vice president of Walker’s Environmental Division. “We want to make every day a Day of Action on Litter in Niagara.”
Ontario’s Day of Action on Litter falls on Tuesday, May 11. Due to ongoing pandemic and current public health restrictions, Walker will be supporting community volunteers and partners on litter initiatives throughout the rest of the year, without being restricted to just one day.
Prior to the pandemic, Walker co-hosted the St. Catharines Day of Action on Litter and Waste in 2019 with the City of St. Catharines. Community groups participated alongside Walker employees and together the volunteers collected over three trucks of litter from areas including Lakeside Park, 12 Mile Creek and Green Ribbon Trail.
Once stay-at-home orders are lifted, community groups organizing clean-ups in the Niagara Region can bring litter that is collected to Walker for disposal at its landfill. Groups will need to register with Walker in advance to arrange free litter disposal.
Please email [email protected] and provide the name of your community clean-up group, the area where the clean-up is taking place and the expected date of the clean-up. Volunteers will then receive their Community Clean-up Registration Number (CCN) to use at the landfill to dispose of the collected litter free of charge.
“It’s important for all of us to follow the three Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – to cut down on litter whenever possible. But it’s equally important for the environment to make sure waste that can’t be recycled goes to the proper place – the landfill,” says Deprez.
