If you're 60 years of age or older and like to exercise, Sarah Galway would like to hear from you.
“We know that exercise is important for individuals across the lifespan - and research has shown that even a brief exercise class can have many positive benefits on health and mood,” said Galway, of the Brock-Niagara Centre for Health and Well-Being.
“However, studies have focused on university populations - leaving the effects in other populations unknown. We want to explore and better understand the effects of a single group exercise class in older adults on health and mood and are looking for men and women ages 60 years and older to participate.”
Participation in the study includes two visits to the Brock-Niagara Centre for Health and Well-Being, located at 130 Lockhart Drive in St. Catharines, she explained.
“The first visit is a one-on-one session and involves filling out a series of questionnaires,” which takes approximately 30 minutes.
"During the second visit, participants complete a group exercise class (approximately 40 minutes) which is a full-body workout, designed for men and women of any fitness level. During the second visit, participants also complete another set of questionnaires."
Participants do not need previous exercise experience, said Galway. To be eligible, participants must be 60 years or older, fluent in English, have normal or corrected to normal hearing, and be able to complete exercise without the use of mobility aids.
For safety purposes, participants must fill out a screening questionnaire to ensure they can safely complete the exercise class.
As compensation for completing the study, participants will be entered in a draw to win a three-month membership to the Brock-Niagara Centre for Health and Well-Being.
