Who has the most beautiful garden in Thorold?

To celebrate the 'Year of the Garden' the Thorold Garden Club is holding a garden contest; 'A garden is beautiful in the eye of the beholder because they do so much'

To celebrate the 'Year of the Garden,' this summer the Thorold Garden Club is looking for the most beautiful garden in Thorold.

“A garden is beautiful in the eye of the beholder because they do so much,” says the club’s president Leslie Daniels, in an interview with ThoroldToday. “They raise our spirits, they make us feel comfortable, they get rid of stress. Every person is different as to what they see as beautiful.”

To enter the contest, Thorold residents need to fill out a form, take a picture of their garden, and submit it to the Thorold Garden Club.

Daniels hopes that people won’t feel too limited in what a garden can be.

“If you think it’s a garden, it’s a garden,” she says. “There are people that just have containers and they’re growing vegetables or they’re growing a huge pot so they take a picture of that and consider that their garden on their balcony. If you think it’s a garden, it’s a garden. Take a picture of it and submit.”

Submissions will be judged once the contest closes at the end of August.

“We have Theresa Forte,” says Daniels. “She is a photographer as well as a garden person. We’re going to get her to judge the pictures.”

The lucky winners will be revealed during a ceremony at the Seniors’ Centre on Saturday, September 24.

To get more people to submit their garden, the garden club will be canvassing all around Thorold.

“Some of our members are going to go out and put door knockers on doors saying that you admire their garden and all the information about the Thorold Garden Club,” says Daniels. “I hope people are going to use that as an opportunity to get a hold of us and maybe submit a picture for the contest.”

Daniels says that Thorold is full of beautiful gardens that she hopes to see featured in the contest.

“Welland Street,” she gives as an example. “They have a lot of gardens that go in between the sidewalk and the road and they’re beautiful, gorgeous.”

To enter the competition you can fill out a submission form and submit it with a picture to this email address. Submission can also be dropped off in the mailbox at 46 Ormond Street South.
