Jackfish beat Maple Leafs 7-5 for ninth straight win

First-place Welland hangs on Saturday against Toronto to move to record of 12-3

WELLAND – The streak lives on.
It was close, but Welland hung on for a 7-5 win Saturday over Toronto – the team’s ninth straight victory.
Brandon Hupe drove in two for the first-place Jackfish (12-3). Jake Sanford went 4-for-4 with two RBI, Tyson Gomm doubled home a pair of runs in the eighth, and Matteo Porcellato had an RBI groundout.
Danny Howat (1-0) earned the win in three innings of relief. He allowed an unearned run on two hits and struck out two. Brandon Marklund started and went four innings and yielded three runs on three hits and two walks.
Lucas Alberti led the Leafs (6-12) with a solo home run. Cole Murchison, Ryan Dos Santos, Jose Vinicio and Jordan Castaldo drove in other runs.
Angel Castro (1-2) lasted 6.1 innings and was touched for five runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Red Sox clobber Barnstormers

CHATHAM – Luke Allen hit his first home run of the season and drove in four to lead Brantford to a 16-6 win in Chatham on Saturday.
Gus Wilson drove in two on two hits for Brantford (5-10). Vaibhav Desai and Graham Tebbit each had two hits, two runs and an RBI, David Alvarez drove in a run and scored four times, and Kieran Bowles, Nick Burdett and Jeremie Veilleux all had an RBI.
Josh Laukkanen (2-1) gave up four runs on nine hits over six innings for the win. He walked one and struck out one.
Seth Strong and Daniel Battel drove in two runs apiece for Chatham-Kent (6-10). Spencer Marcus went 3-for-5 and scored twice while Anthony Polowick and Noah Murciano each drove in a run.
Cam O’Reilly (1-2) took the loss after giving up seven runs (six earned) on five hits over four innings. He walked four and struck out two.

Royals win pitchers’ duel

GUELPH – Guelph pitchers Kyle Thomas and Jacob Kush combined to strike out 11 London batters in a dominant three-hit shutout over the Majors on Saturday at David E. Hastings Stadium.
Thomas (1-0) went the first five innings and fanned five while scattering all three hits. Kush finished the game and walked two and struck out six without giving up a hit.
Garrett Takamatsu drove in the lone run in the fourth inning, a single that scored Brando Leroux.
Travis Keys (3-1) was the hard-luck losing pitcher, striking out nine over eight innings and allowing one run on three hits. He also walked two.
London fell to 9-4, and Guelph improved to 9-4.

Baycats-Cardinals rained out

BARRIE – Saturday’s scheduled game in Barrie between the Baycats and Hamilton Cardinals was rained out. No make-up date has been announced.
Barrie (9-4) is second in the IBL, and Hamilton (8-7) sits fifth after a pair of wins.
