Jackfish blank Royals in Tuesday night IBL action

Ben Abram struck out five over 7.1 shutout innings, and Welland hitters smacked a pair of home runs in a 3-0 win Tuesday in Guelph.

Abram scattered three hits and walked two as the first-place Jackfish improved to 19-4. The right-hander leads IBL pitchers with six wins and is second in strikeouts (58) and third in earned-run average (2.21). Deivy Mendez struck out the side for his seventh save.

Robert Mullen broke open a scoreless game with a two-run blast in the sixth. Gianfranco Morello added a solo home run in the eighth. Matteo Porcellato went 2-for-4 and stole three bases to increase his league-leading total to 17.

Brando Leroux and Conner Morro had two hits apiece for the Royals (12-8).

Evan Grills (1-2) took the loss on the mound. He allowed three runs on eight hits with three walks and eight strikeouts over 8.1 innings.
