A Welland win or Barrie loss means the Jackfish earns top seed entering playoffs

CHATHAM – Welland’s magic number to clinch first place dropped to one following a 9-1 win Saturday in Chatham.

Dawson Tweet went 3-for-4 with a three-run blast for the Jackfish (29-10), who lead Barrie by 3.5 games with three games remaining. Barrie has four games left, and a Welland win or Barrie loss means the Jackfish earns top seed entering playoffs.

Gianfranco Morello hit a solo home run, Robert Mullen drove in three on a single and double, Steven Moretto had an RBI, Jonah Weisner went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Jake Sanford singled twice and scored twice.

Enrique Saldana (6-2) fired seven shutout innings for the win. He scattered three hits and fanned five.

For Chatham-Kent (17-22), Spencer Marcus had an RBI and Sadler Goodwin doubled.

Brock Whitson (5-3) suffered the loss after yielding three runs on five hits in three innings. He walked one and struck out two.

Ejoh leads Baycats past Majors

BARRIE – Canice Ejoh went 4-for-6 and drove in three runs in Barrie’s 14-4 win Saturday over London.

Ejoh also scored three times as the second-place Baycats moved to 25-13.

Brandon Hernandez had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBI. Tyler Plumpton went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs, Hayden Jaco drove in a run, Adam Odd singled, doubled and scored three times, and Malik Williams singled twice.

Cesar Rosado (7-1) struck out 11 over five innings to earn the win. He allowed three runs on three hits and two walks.

Gibson Krzeminski, Brad Verhoeven and Noah Williams all had an RBI for the fourth-place Majors (22-14). Byron Reichstein singled and doubled.

London starting pitcher Jonathan Henry gave up 11 runs (eight earned) on nine hits over 2.1 innings. He walked three and struck out two.

Panthers inch closer to playoffs

BRANTFORD – Kitchener moved two games up on Brantford for the eighth and final playoff spot with a 4-3 win on Saturday.

Yunior Ibarra hit a solo home run for the Panthers (12-25). Ryan Burnside singled, doubled and had an RBI, Nolan Misa drove in a run and Blake Jacklin had a pair of hits.

Jose Vasquez (4-4) earned the win. He went 6.1 innings and was charged with three runs on 11 hits, striking out five. Yankiel Mauris secured the save after striking out two in 2.2 scoreless innings.

Jaret Lupton drove in two on a pair of hits for the Red Sox (10-27). Nick Burdett went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Mike Dorcean and Jeremie Veilleux each singled twice.

Jeremias Sucre allowed four runs (three earned) on 10 hits over 6.1 innings for the loss. He struck out two.

Eguchi dominates in Cards’ win

GUELPH – Takaki Eguchi gave up a run over seven innings in Hamilton’s 6-1 win Saturday at Guelph.

The Cardinals’ righty (8-2) scattered four hits, walked three and fanned four.

At the plate, Tyler Duncan drove in three on two hits, while Danny Berg went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Rikelbin DeCastro went 2-for-5 with two runs and had one of three Hamilton steals.

Hamilton moved to 17-21 and is fifth in the IBL.

Andy Leader drove in the lone run for fourth-place Guelph. He also stole his seventh base of the season. Jacob Kush (5-2) gave up four runs (one earned) on four hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out six.
