Preliminary hearing rescheduled for Sturgeon Lake man charged with manslaughter

A preliminary hearing for a man charged with manslaughter in the death of a 48-year-old man from Sturgeon Lake has been rescheduled.

The preliminary hearing for Ryan Kyle Daniels, 40, also from Sturgeon Lake, is now set for Sept. 15 in Prince Albert Provincial Court. The preliminary hearing was originally scheduled for April 29-30.

Daniels is charged in connection to the death of Darwin Al Naytowhow, 48. Prince Albert RCMP and EMS found Naytowhow unresponsive on Sturgeon Lake First Nation at about 10 a.m. on July 14, 2019. EMS declared Naytowhow deceased at the scene.

The RCMP’s initial investigation determined the cause of death to be suspicious. An autopsy was done July 18, 2019, in Saskatoon.

Naytowhow left behind a wife and four children. His family and friends mourned his death and posted condolences on social media.

Naytowhow’s son, Jade Kingfisher, shared, “The day we lay you down to rest, will be a wake up call for me, I can’t explain this feeling in any other way knowing you won’t be there anymore, I try to tell myself you will be looking down at us, but I still feel like you’re at home.. and expecting that call from you, hows my baby Naliah’s going to miss it all. In loving memory, of a father, son, grandfather, cousin, friend, brother, husband. Your memories will be surely missed dad.”

A wake service for Naytowhow was held July 18 and July 19 at the Sturgeon Lake Community Hall. A funeral service was held July 20 in Sturgeon Lake.

Daniels isn’t in custody. He was released on bail July 25, 2019.

Sturgeon Lake First Nation is about 30 kilometres northwest of Prince Albert.
