BANGKOK — Taya Hanson had 19 points and six rebounds as Canada halted a late Mozambique comeback for a 60-59 victory on Sunday in round-robin play at the FIBA under-19 Women's World Cup.
Christina Morra added 12 points while Aaliyah Edwards and Merissah Russell had nine points apiece for the Canadians, who were coming off a 65-54 loss to Latvia in the tournament opener Saturday.
Edwards had nine rebounds for the second game in a row and Rusell had eight boards.
Mozambique's Chanaya Pinto recorded a game-high 23 points in the loss.
Canada led 56-43 entering the fourth quarter and scored just four more points before the game ended. Mozambique poured in 16 points to trim the deficit to one with thirty seconds remaining on the clock.
Canada is in Group A along with Latvia, Mozambique and Thailand. The Canadians will face Thailand to conclude the group phase on Tuesday.
Canada earned a historic bronze medal at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2017 in Italy. The bronze was Canada's first medal in eight appearances at the event since it began in 1985.
Last summer, the team earned a silver medal at the FIBA under-18 Women's Americas Championship 2018 in Mexico City, Mexico.
