Charges upgraded to second degree murder after victim dies

At approximately 1:11 pm, on Sunday January 26, 2025, Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) 2 District (Niagara Falls/Niagara-on-the-Lake) uniform officers responded to the Greater Niagara General Hospital (GNGH) following concerns regarding an adult male who had been brought to the hospital severely injured from a suspected assault.

Due to the nature of the victim’s injuries, he was transported to an out of region hospital for specialized medical care. 

An Investigation led by 2 District Criminal Investigative Branch was initiated.  It was determined the incident occurred at 4900  Buckley Avenue in the City of Niagara Falls.

On Sunday, January 26, 2025, 44-year-old Blair Young was arrested and charged with the following offence:

  • Attempt to Commit Murder

Young was held in custody prior to a bail hearing on Monday, January 27, 2025, at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in the City of St. Catharines where he was remanded into custody.

On Friday January 31, 2025, members of the NRPS were notified that the male succumbed to his injuries. At that time, the Homicide Unit took carriage of this investigation.

On Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Young made an additional appearance at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse where his charges were upgraded to:

  • Second-Degree Murder

Detectives have determined that the victim and suspect are known to one another.  This is not a random attack and there was no danger to the public.
