One charged after stolen vehicle crashes in ditch

On February 12, 2025, the Niagara Regional Police Service began an investigation into a break and enter that occurred in the City of St. Catharines.

Information was that at approximately 5:00am, Moesz Auto Dealership was broken into and multiple items were stolen, including various key fobs for vehicles, and a 2015 Audi TT two-door coupe.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, on February 12, 2025 at approximately 9:40pm, 1 District (St. Catharines/Thorold) uniform officers with the Niagara Regional Police Service were conducting routine patrol when they identified the stolen vehicle in the City of St. Catharines.  Officers followed the vehicle in a safe manner as it travelled into Niagara Falls. Officers then conducted a strategic stop in the area of Mountain Road and Kalar Road in the City of Niagara Falls. The driver then attempted to evade officers however the suspect lost control, and slid into a ditch. The male driver then exited the vehicle and was promptly arrested without further incident.

There were no injuries as a result of the incident.

Matthew Belisle (23 years old) of St. Catharines was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Flight from peace officer
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (4 Counts)
  • Operation while prohibited (2 Counts)
  • Fail to comply with probation order
  • Break Enter and Commit - Theft of Motor Vehicle

Belisle was held in custody pending a bail hearing that is expected to take place on February 13, 2025 at the Robert S.K Welch Courthouse located at 59 Church Street in the City of St. Catharine’s
