On Friday, November 22, 2024, members of the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) conducted R.I.D.E. spot checks in the City of Niagara Falls and City of Thorold.
Throughout the night, officers stopped roughly 700 vehicles and inquired if any of the drivers had consumed any alcohol or drugs earlier in the evening. In total, 11 drivers had to provide a sample of their breath for analysis, and two other drivers were required to perform standardized field sobriety tests. One young/novice driver provided a breath sample registering a blood alcohol concentration above zero, while another driver’s breath sample registered an “Alert”, resulting in their driver’s licence being suspended for three days.
In addition, five Provincial Offence Notices were issued to drivers under the Highway Traffic Act, and an additional two Part III Summons were issued to a driver and a passenger under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act after investigation revealed that the vehicle they were operating and/or permitting others to operate was not insured.
The Niagara Regional Police Service remains committed to reducing impaired driving offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E.
Throughout the course of the evening, officers determined that over 30% of the vehicles were part of a ride sharing service such as Uber and Lyft. The Niagara Regional Police Service thanks the public for helping to ensure safer roadways and responsible travel in our community.
Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing death in Canada.
