At approximately 6:15 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, 1 District (St. Catharines) uniform officers were called to the area of the Burgoyne Bridge in the City of St. Catharines in response to a welfare check.
At approximately 6:25 a.m., the area surrounding the Burgoyne Bridge and the southbound lanes of the 406 were closed to traffic for a sudden-death investigation.
The traffic closures are anticipated to remain in place throughout most of the morning hours.
As a result of an interaction with an officer and the deceased, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked their mandate. The SIU is a civilian law-enforcement agency that investigates incidents involving police officers where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
With the investigative involvement of the SIU, the Niagara Regional Police Service is unable to provide further information on this sudden death.
