Suspects bike across Lake Erie ice to to allegedly steal wire

On January 15, 2025, at 12:10pm 6 District (Port Colborne / Wainfleet) uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) responded to a theft in progress call along the Lake Erie Waterfront in Port Colborne.

The initial investigation determined that two males had traversed across the ice with bicycles to a break wall near the Port Colborne / Lake Erie light house. The male suspects were believed to be stealing cable / wire.

Officers from the NRPS Marine Unit attended and after putting on ice survival suits walked across the ice and arrested one of the males. The second male suspect attempted to evade officers by walking across the ice and briefly wading into open water. The second suspect was arrested after coming a shore at approximately 2:10pm.

Officers were assisted by Port Colborne Fire Service personnel and Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics. The males were assessed for hypothermia.

The investigation remains ongoing. An updated media release with further details will be issued tomorrow morning.
