Officers from the 2 District – Niagara Falls office of the Niagara Regional Police Service commenced an investigation after being contacted by the public regarding vandalism at the public docks in Chippawa / Niagara Falls.
The Chippawa Public Dock has had numerous issues with vandalism, mischief, and rowdy behaviour. Over the course of the weekend of Aug. 8-10, 2020 a group of youths attended the dock and damaged the railing that houses safety equipment for boaters and swimmers.
Officers have identified the persons responsible with the assistance of the public.
On Aug. 19, 2020, two youth males were arrested and charged in relation to the damage.
A 14-year-old and a 15-year-old male, both from Niagara Falls, have been charged with the alleged offence of:
• Mischief under $5,000
The 14-year-old was released with a future court date.
The 15-year-old was held in custody for a video bail hearing, held on Aug. 20, 2020 at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines.
A second 14-year-old male from Niagara Falls was cautioned under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act for his role in the damage.
Damage is estimated at $350.
The Niagara Regional Police Service is prohibited from identifying the three youths involved in this matter under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
