On Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025, at approximately 2:55 a.m. 1 District (St. Catharines/Thorold) uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) attended the area of Helliwells Lane and St. Paul Street in the City of St. Catharines for a disturbance.
Initial investigation determined that a group of approximately five individuals engaged in a fist fight against one victim. Once the victim was on the ground the group continued the assault. Police attended and a short foot pursuit ensued which resulted in identifying part of the group. The victim, a 25 year-old-male, sustained minor injuries.
The investigation is being continued by officers from 1 District Community Oriented Response and Engagement (CORE) Unit. Police are asking community members who were in the area of St. Paul Street and Helliwells Lane in downtown St. Catharines between the hours of 2:55 a.m. to 3:05 a.m. to forward cell phone or dashcam video that captured the incident to investigators.
