NOTL Cenotaph under wraps

Work on the exterior of the oft-photographed landmark is expected to be completed by the end of October, in time for the annual Remembrance Day ceremony

Scaffolding has been erected surrounding the exterior of the iconic Queen Street cenotaph.

The landmark acts as a memorial to the men from Niagara-on-the-Lake who gave their lives during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. It was unveiled on June 24, 1922 and originally served as a timekeeper for residents during the 1920s and 1930s. A dedication ceremony that day was attended by the Honourable Henry Cockshutt, then Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

With the scaffolding installed, the repairs to the exterior are set to begin. The hope is to complete the exterior work by Oct. 31 and in time for the annual Remembrance Day ceremony held at the site. Restoration activities will include brickwork repointing, parging and restoration of the clock face. Interior restoration, mostly related to water damage, will follow.

"The restoration of the Cenotaph is a testament to our community's incredible spirit and generosity," said Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa in a press release dated before the work began. "This effort ensures that an important piece of our town's history is preserved for future generations. On behalf of council, thank you to everyone who donated. I look forward to witnessing the restoration process."

A fundraising committee, led by NOTL resident Peter Warrack, raised $80,500 for the joint project of the town and the Royal Canadian Legion Brach 124. The repair work is being guided by the research conducted by the students at the  Willowbank School of Restoration Arts. They produced a 40-page report detailing repairs that were needed immediately as well as the importance of ongoing maintenance once those repairs are completed.

All the work to be carried out will be done under a town heritage permit.
