Thorold art gallery celebrates contemporary Canadian artists with Square Foot Show

The gallery's Square Foot Show features an array of artworks, all measuring twelve by twelve inches; 'We're always trying to show as many artists as we can'

On Friday evening, Thorold art aficionados came together at White Galleon Gallery on Front Street to celebrate the opening of the Square Foot Art Show.

“We have artists from all over Ontario and basically Canada actually,” gallery owner Patrick Pietruszko tells ThoroldToday. “We have new art from most of our represented artists as well.”

The Square Foot Show features a dynamic array of affordable artworks, all measuring twelve by twelve inches.

“We have a few international names but mostly Canadian contemporary artists,” Pietruszko says. “I'd say 90 percent are paintings but then we also have metal sculptures, a few ceramics, glass, so it's a pretty big mix of everything.”

To put the show together, Pietruszko solicited artists from all over the world.

“We had a lot of submissions,” he says. “The response was amazing. We had more art than we could show, so we will definitely have to expand the show somehow with the space that we have.”

Among the artists on display, there are a few internationally renowned names.

“This time around we have a Dali, Picasso and Miro on display as well,” Pietruszko says. “Everything's always for sale. If you're looking at Picasso or Dali paintings, they go for a large amount, but if you're looking at some of the etchings or ceramics, they can go from $2000 to $10,000 so it’s much more affordable for everyone.”

But the goal of the show is to shine a spotlight on Canadian artists.

“We're always trying to show as many artists as we can,” says Pietruszko. “Canadian artists are always telling me that they don't have a place to show so we're trying to fill that void for them.”

The Square Foot Art Show runs until December 14th. For the gallery’s opening hours, head to their website.
