A Thorold bike team raised over $3,000 for MS research this weekend.

Organized by Matt Redmond, whose mother Judith is battling the condition, team 'Judy's Jewels' set out from the Lock 7 Viewing Centre and made the trek to Welland as a part of the virtual MS Bike Ride.

Water, popsicles, and encouragement met the team halfway, as Judy made it out to cheer the riders on, as they made the last 20 kilometers.

For Matt, it's a personal mission to keep the spotlight on the disease.

"MS is a horrible disease. We are raising awareness about it, and keep our hope up for a cure," said Redmond.

Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the world, with an estimated 77,000 Canadians living with the disease.

While it is most often diagnosed in young adults aged 20 to 49, younger children and older adults are also diagnosed with the disease.
