‘Turning of the sod’ ceremony to mark 200th anniversary of Welland Canal

The city's heritage committee is looking to celebrate the milestone with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque

It's been 200 years since the construction of The Welland Canal began, and the Thorold Heritage Committee wants to celebrate the milestone.

That’s why they’re looking to organize a 'Turning of the Sod' ceremony that will feature a plaque unveiling and speeches from dignitaries.

“The St. Laurence Seaway Management Corporation has expressed their interest in funding the commemorative plaque,” said Mayor Terry Ugulini, during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

The event will take place on November 30, 2024, near the bridge in Allanburg. More details to follow in the coming months.
