After two years of empty downtown streets, this summer could be the complete opposite after Thorold's Business Improvement Association announced it will be bringing a weekly car show to Front Street.
Car enthusiasts can get their shopping done from downtown merchants while checking out upwards to 250 cars which will be parked and put on display every Friday between May and September, BIA chair Serge Carpino told ThoroldToday on Tuesday.
"It's a go," Carpino said. "It got approved at the general meeting last month. The city is on board with street closures too. We have a pretty downtown, and we need to bring people there."
The initiative is being pulled off together with Cruise Niagara from Welland, an organization for car enthusiasts. Antiques, hot rods, low riders and more will be lining downtown streets during warm summer afternoons.
"Together with guests that the cruisers will be bringing along, we could probably see 4-500 people down there. It will be great for the businesses and merchants at the same time."
Thorold's downtown was remade during the summer of 2020 to make it more shopping-friendly - however the remake has not seen much use, due to repeated business closures and stay-at-home orders.
Carpino said representatives spearheading the project will meet this week to continue preparations ahead of this summer.
