On November 16, 2024, at 12:34 a.m. emergency services personnel responded to the scene of a serious collision in the City of Niagara Falls.
Niagara Regional Police Service 2 District (Niagara Falls / Niagara on the Lake) uniform officers along with Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics and Niagara Falls Fire Service attended at two scenes; Drummond Road near Barker Street and Culp Street near Drummond Road.
On Drummond Road two persons had been found laying in the street having been struck by a car. A 44-year-old female from Niagara Falls was found to be in critical condition. Despite lifesaving efforts, she was pronounced deceased at the scene. A 31-year-old female from Niagara Falls was found near by with serious injuries. She was treated by paramedics and transported to an out of region hospital for further care.
NRPS officers attending the Culp Street scene found a grey Acura Integra that had collided with two parked cars and the driver still behind the wheel.
Further investigation and evidence linked the vehicle and driver to the Drummond Road fail to remain scene involving the two female pedestrians.
At 1:03 a.m. the driver of the Acura, John Franco Bonaldo (31 years) of Niagara Falls was arrested. He has been charged with the Criminal Code offences of:
- Fail to Stop After Accident Resulting in Death
- Fail to Stop After Accident Resulting in Bodily Harm
- Operation While Impaired Causing Death
- Operation While Impaired Causing Bodily Harm
- Operation While Impaired - Exceed BAC
Bonaldo was held in custody for a video bail hearing to the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines on November 16, 2024.
Detectives from the NRPS Collision Reconstruction Unit have been assigned to the investigation. They are being assisted by the NRPS Forensic Service Unit.
Road closures remain in effect in the area of the scenes, but are anticipated to be lifted this morning. Motorists are asked to stay out of the area and find alternative routes.
