Niagara Regional Police say they have laid charges in connection with a homicide investigation earlier this year in Smithville.

Cathy Prosje, 62, was found dead in April.

As a result of an ongoing investigation, on Thursday homicide unit detectives arrested a suspect.

Joseph Villneff, 42, of Smithville has been charged with first degree murder, police said in a release.

Prosje was located deceased in their shared Smithville home in the area of Lindan Street and Alma Drive on April 26.

Villneff is currently being held in custody pending a bail hearing on Oct. 11 at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Villneff is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
