Victim seriously injured in Welland machete attack: Police

Accused was found in possession of fentanyl, cocaine, methadone at the time of his arrest, police say

On April 8, 2021 at approximately 6 a.m., 3 District – Welland uniform officers responded to a disturbance involving two men in Welland.

Officers arrived on scene at a house on Jefferson Court West near Lancaster Drive in Welland. The initial investigation determined that two men had become involved in a physical fight. [It is alleged that] during the fight one of the men armed himself with a machete-style knife and struck the other.

The victim, a man in his 30s from Welland, suffered serious injuries and was treated at the scene by Niagara Emergency Medical Service paramedics and transported to local hospital. The injuries have been determined to be not life-threatening.

Officers identified and arrested a suspect at the scene. A search of the suspect at the time of his arrest led to the discovery of more weapons (knives) and suspected illegal drugs.

Daylen Christian Gyldenbjerg (26 years old) of no fixed address has been arrested and charged with the  offences of:
    •    Aggravated assault contrary to section 268 of the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose contrary to section 88(2) of the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    Possession for the purpose of trafficking - schedule 1 fentanyl contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
    •    Possession for the purpose of trafficking - schedule 1 cocaine contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
    •    Possession of a schedule 1 substance - methadone contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

Gyldenbjerg was held in custody for a video bail hearing that was held on April 8, 2021. He was held in custody by the courts and is scheduled to appear again by video on today’s date.
