Firearm seized after 'high risk take down' of suspect in St. Catharines

On Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024, at approximately 1:35am, 1 District (St. Catharines/Thorold) uniform officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service responded to the Burgoyne Bridge on St. Paul West Street, in the city of St. Catharines for an armed person call.

Information was that an unknown male suspect was yelling at an adult male and had threatened him with a gun.

As a result of the investigation, detectives were able to locate the suspect nearby. A high risk take down was initiated and the suspect was placed under arrest without incident and a fully loaded 32 calibre revolver was located in his possession.

George A. Ziegler (28 years old) of St. Catharines was arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

  • Carrying Concealed Weapon
  • Possess Firearm without Holding a Licence
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon
  • Uttering Threats
  • Possess Loaded Regulated Firearm

Ziegler was held in custody pending a bail hearing that is expected to take place on December 3, 2024. at the Robert S.K. Welch Courthouse located at 59 Church Street in the City of St. Catharines.
